New Years resolutions (and how to keep them)

In the first post of 2016, I should start by wishing you all a Happy New Year – I am not entirely sure after what time it becomes unsuitable to wish someone a HNY – but, for now, we will agree that whilst still in January it should be OK

If you are like me, I am sure that you will have made a plethora or resolutions at the turn of the new year – some of them may even have been about your business – and I find myself wondering – how many of them have made it past the first week at work in January?

A slight aside – before Christmas my wife hurt her foot – she twisted it coming downstairs wearing high heels – and, according to her, it was the most excruciatingly painful experience for a long time.  She was unable to put a shoe on for several days.  Eventually, I persuaded her to do something about it – and she went to see a physiotherapist – who gave her a ‘fix it’ solution

But Physiotherapists, Doctors and anyone else in the ‘fix it’ business can only do so much - the vast majority of the rehabilitation or transformation happens away from the surgery

The physio worked some magic on her foot – but he gave her a whole load of exercises to do at home - nothing complicated, just a few stretches to try and alleviate the pain – but, guess what, as soon as her foot started to feel better – she stopped doing the exercises.  All of the intentions were there at first – but in a couple of days she fell back into old habits and stopped doing them completely

The result is that her foot is still giving her some pain – but how could she expect it to when she hadn’t followed the plan?

These days people are quick to blame the plan before they blame the execution of it - and so instead of coming to the conclusion that the plan didn’t work because she didn’t actually stick to it she blamed the physio for giving her a plan that didn’t work!

It’s a bit like when people join the gym, go for all of 20 minutes in a 2 month period and then claim that the “gym doesn’t work for them”!

It’s not the plan, it’s the execution

If 2016 is going to be a year when you want to create a plan that you can stick to – a plan that is going to help you succeed in business then make it a resolution to do something about it
